The rim is the weak point of any handpan. A knock there changes the tension in the steel, and with it the tuning. This hand-braided edge protector wraps around the whole rim and absorbs impact before it reaches the instrument.

Why the rim in particular needs protecting

The two half shells of a handpan are joined at the rim. That is exactly where any impact acts directly on the tension of the tone fields. A scratch on the surface is annoying; a blow to the rim can mean a retune.

The braided band is made by hand and sits close without damping the sound. It stays in place permanently and can be taken off at any time.
