Why a small instrument costs more than a large one

The smaller the playing surface, the less it forgives. At 53 cm the tuner has room: a tone field can sit half a centimetre out and the ear barely notices. At 30 cm those same nine fields sit on a third of the area, and any deviation hits the overtones immediately. The reject rate is higher and the tuning takes longer. A cheap mini handpan is therefore almost always a badly tuned mini handpan.

The steel: where the real difference lies

Cheap minis are drawn from thin standard sheet. Anyone who has held one knows the result: the note is there, but it cuts out after a second and sounds tinny. Premium steel holds the fundamental steady and lets the sustain carry. At 30 cm that difference is more audible than at 53 cm, because here the material carries the whole sound.

F Kurd, and why this scale suits the format

Kurd is the most played handpan scale in the world: meditative, warm, melodic from the first touch. In F it sits a shade higher and more open than the common D version. That is a deliberate choice: small shells have their best definition in higher registers. A mini in low D sounds pressed; a mini in F sounds complete. Wrong notes do not exist.
